Young Composers' Competition 2012


The ASME Qld Young Composers' Competition in back for 2012 with an exciting new format and additional sections to cater for the wide cross-section of composition which is occuring in Queensland schools.


SECTIONS

The new sections for 2012 are:

Vocal/Instrumental Section (incorporating Matthew Sorensen Memorial Senior Prize - 1st place)

While the style/genre of this section can be from classical through to contemporary, the compsitions are to be specifically written for an instrument(s) (solo or any combination of ensemble) and/or vocal (art song or choral, but not in song writing style).

 

Song Writing Section

Entries in this section are to be in a contemporary style and music include original lyrics and music. This is the only section in which a group entry is permissable. For example one student may be responsible for the lyrics and two students may be responsible for the music. A maximum of 5 students may be in the group. Prizes for this section will be shared among the group members.

 

Binary Music Electronic Music Section

Within this section, students are able to submit compositions that make use of loops (previously generated or original), compositions that make use of sampling and those compositions which specifically manupulate sound sources through digital means. Please note that composition that make use of notational software are to be entered into the vocal/instrumental section.

 

AGE GROUP DIVISIONS

Within each section of the competition, the following age group divisions apply:

    • Primary: Students currently enrolled in Years 1 to 6

    • Junior: Students currently enrolled in Years 7 to 9

    • Senior: Students currently enrolled in Years 10 to 12

 

PRIZES

The prizes on offer in 2012 across all 3 sections of the compeition are:

Primary Division

    • 1st prize - $50
    • 2nd Prize - $30
    • 3rd Prize - $20

Junior Division

    • 1st Prize - $80
    • 2nd Prize - $50
    • 3rd Prize - $30

Senior Division

    • 1st Prize - $130
    • 2nd Prize - $70
    • 3rd Prize - $50


Please Note: Monetary value will be awarded either in cash or in gift vouchers. Prize recipients will also be awarded medallions. Highly commended students will receive a prize from one of our sponsors. All entries will receive detailed adjudicator's comments and certificates of participation. These will be posted to all entrants after the awards ceremony.

 

FINALISTS' CONCERT

The finalists' across all sections of the competition will be recognised at our annual YCC Awards concert on Sunday 21 October 2012. This year's concert will be held at Canon Hill Anglican College. Further specific details TBC.

 

COST PER ENTRY

The cost per entry for this year's competition is:

    • Primary Age Divisions - $15 per entry

    • Junior & Senior Age Divisions - $20 per entry

 

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

All entries in the compeition are subject to the conditions of entry outlined on the official entry form.
